Photo Album
Digital projection onto blank photo album
Dimensions vary
2007

Photo Album is a small scale sculpture/projection work in which images appear and dissolve into each other and eventually fade away. This animation is projected onto a blank photo album.

This project began with the purchasing of vernacular snapshots from anonymous family albums on eBay. The more I collected these photographs, the more I noticed certain typologies emerging. I decided to organize and sequence the photographs according to these themes, for example, “photographs of women standing in their yard,” “vacation snapshots,” ”families gathered by the kitchen table”, and “children beside Christmas trees.” I animated these groupings so that one image fades into the next image of the same typology. These thematic groupings of images all appear projected onto the blank album, and fade in and out of the album at varying speeds.

This project aims to reveal the dual nature of vernacular snapshot photography, as both the personal, idiosyncratic qualities of an image, as well as its non-unique qualities as it emerges as part of a larger genre. It alludes to the relentless human impulse to photograph and be photographed, as well as organize, order and archive our memories. As a digital projection piece, Photo Album also references the transformation of snapshot photography from an analog to digital format, and how this removes the snapshot of its tangible, object form.
