This project aims to deconstruct the single photographic snapshot within the larger, ongoing passage of time.

I have started with a snapshot from my family's personal archive; a portrait of my two grandparents, aunt and mother sitting on their living room couch in their home in 1967. Forty one years after that snapshot has been taken, I have asked the very same people in that snapshot to recreate that same image, using video this time to capture the results. I instructed them to stay still, holding their original poses from the photograph for as long as they could.

The singular moment that was immortalized in the snapshot becomes suspended in time. Using video, I have been able to illustrate the complexity of the still image, as that fragmented moment becomes disrupted and reassembled when reinserted back within the stream of time. Poses and expressions change, light dims and brightens, the original image is no longer the same.

This piece also builds upon another notion of time: the passage of time since the original snapshot was taken. Familiar relationships have changed and identities have formed; they can no longer fit into that rigid mold.
